Exploring: Portrait Photography in West Michigan
With over 20 years in the commercial photography world, I’ve had the privilege of helping brands, entrepreneurs, and small businesses tell their stories through professional, high-quality imagery. Traditionally, my focus has been on headshots, corporate branding, and other commercial photography needs. However, as my work has expanded over the years, I’ve had more and more clients asking for personal portrait sessions— yes, even senior photos — a shift that’s given me an entirely new perspective and creative outlet within photography.
Why I Began Taking on More Portrait Photography
Portrait photography offers something different from my usual commercial projects. It’s a personal experience, not just for the client but also for me as a photographer. Unlike commercial work, where the focus is often on a product or brand identity, portraits are all about capturing the essence of the individual. This approach has its challenges but also opens up creative opportunities that I hadn’t explored fully before. With each session, I’m creating images that feel authentic, timeless, and meaningful for each client.
The growing interest from clients in having a dedicated, professional portrait session initially surprised me. Many wanted a more relaxed session where they could let their personality shine rather than simply showcasing a polished, professional look. After seeing the demand and experiencing how rewarding these sessions can be, I realized how much I enjoyed crafting portraits that capture people’s true character and style.
Portrait Photography Across West Michigan
As a photographer based in West Michigan, I love incorporating the region’s unique landscape into my portrait sessions. We’re lucky to have access to both urban and natural settings in and around Grand Rapids, each offering distinct backdrops for portraits. Whether we’re shooting in the downtown area, along the shores of Lake Michigan, or in the area’s parks, the versatility of these locations allows me to create a wide range of looks for my clients.
In a recent session, I worked with a client who wanted a portrait series that felt genuine and reflective of her personality. We shot in a variety of locations, blending outdoor settings with more intimate, natural light environments. The result was a collection of portraits that ranged from candid and relaxed to polished and refined, providing her with images she could use for both personal and professional purposes.
Quality and Dedication to Craft
Regardless of the project type, my commitment to quality remains unwavering. With every portrait session, my goal is to ensure that clients feel comfortable, enjoy the process, and receive images they’ll treasure for years. Portrait sessions require a different kind of attention, a more personalized approach, but it’s one I’ve come to enjoy as I get to know each client and work to showcase who they truly are.
A New Chapter in Portrait Photography
While I’m still deeply rooted in commercial photography, adding portrait sessions to my services has given me a new creative outlet. Portrait photography allows me to capture people’s unique qualities in a way that feels authentic and artistic, blending my experience and passion for storytelling with a personal touch.
If you’re based in West Michigan and are looking for a portrait session that captures your personality with care and professionalism, I’d love to help. With my years of experience and dedication to high-quality service and prints, you can trust that your session will be both enjoyable and memorable.
